Jim Eng
Artist's Statement
"Although I am a painter, I have always responded to the use of collage, assemblage, and mixed mediums. The utilization and juxtaposition of found, disparate images, pieces of deconstructed paintings, old, rusted metal objects, or weathered wood with peeling paint, is exciting to me. I enjoy creating ordered chaos (or chaotic order) in my work. At times, I will hint at themes, which might be politically or socially charged, pertain to nature and environment, or contain evocative or ironic passages. Some of my works may convey a sense of mystery or antiquity while others may have as their focus pure visual design or abstraction. As with all my work, it is my hope that the viewer will join in the adventure and find his or her meaning in the work."
Artist Bio
Jim Eng is a painter and mixed media artist. He has exhibited extensively and also taught for thirty-two years at Framingham State University, where he is a Professor Emeritus. Mr. Eng received his B.F.A. and M.F.A. in painting from Tufts University in affiliation with the School of the Boston Museum of Fine Arts. He also studied at Alfred University, School of Design. Mr. Eng was Curriculum Director of the Massachusetts Prison Art Project and has taught numerous classes and workshops in oil painting, watercolor and mixed media, throughout the Boston and Metro-West area. Mr. Eng's exhibition record includes solo shows at the Danforth Museum of Art, the Kingston Gallery, Mazmanian Gallery at Framingham State University, Pine Manor College, Bentley College, the Middlesex School in Concord, MA, the Cambridge Art Association, the Ashland Library, and the Goodnow Library, Sudbury. He has been in numerous group shows in museums and galleries including the Fuller Museum of Art, the Danforth Museum of Art, Kingston Gallery, the Zullo Gallery, the Perin Gallery, Bridgewater State College, University of Massachusetts Boston, the Chinese Culture Institute, the Cambridge Art Association and the South Shore Art Center.
